Task Manager

Hi all
When I press "Alt. Ctrl. Del." I get a message saying that "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator".
I am using xp home, and it is a personal computer. I am logged in as a System Administrator.
Could this be caused by a virus of some kind?
Please be specific as I am an old newbie.
Thanks...............Jim

Jim,

Go to the following link:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Download the file labeled 'Enable The Task Manager' and run it. It is located in the right column of Line 51.

Well, I should have expected that.

Download and run the 'Enable Registry Editing Tools' file on Line 213 on the same website. Once that's done, you should be able to run the previous file.

You should probably scan for viruses and spy/adware if you haven't already done so just to make sure nothing of that sort is causing this problem.

Download Registrar Lite from:

http://www.resplendence.com/download

That should allow you to edit the registry. If it does, you will need to find/search for the 'DisableRegistryTools' registry key and change the value from 1 to 0.

Let's hope that works!

Just did a virus scan with AVG, and nothing, took out some spyware with Lavasoft, and ran Spybot Search and destroy.
Still I was thinking about a worm myself, been having some funny things happen, like my AVG does start by itself anymore. nor does Zone alarm, and my E-mail was not working either.
Tried all the free virus scans out there, and came up with nothing, do you think I should get the 30 day free trail of NOD 32?
Kind of want to stay away from messing in the registy as I don't know what I am doing there, and understand you can really mess things up.

Have you checked your group policy settings?
Try START > RUN > gpedit.msc

This opens the Group Policy editor
Navigate to the following tree (by pressing the +) beside it:
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System

What does the policy for:
Prevent access to registry editing tools read?
If it is enabled? You can double click on it and change it to disabled or NOT configured.

Then try:
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > CTRL+ALT+DEL options
What does the policy for:
Remove task manager read?
If it is set to enable .. double click it and change it to disabled or NOT configured.

Have you tried checking your windows\system32\ directory for gpedit.msc?

EDIT: oops, dont think Home has gpedit.msc Unless it comes as a supplementary add on.

Hi jimbo:

Try running the reg file with the /s switch to bypass the registry access prevention.

For example, I the attached file (etm.reg.txt) contains the registry keys to change your registry settings to enable the task manager.
Right click on the file and do save as and save to a known location like C:\ and rename it to etm.reg

now in START > RUN > type the following:
regedit /s C:\etm.reg
