Are you able to get to task manager when it freezes? Are you sure it's the whole computer or is it just an application?

What browser are you using and is it fully updated?

Also, make sure your spybot is fully updated.

the task mamager works most of the time. but sometine after closing the link it freezes and i have to go to restart.

i also forgot to mention that i am running windows xp home with sbc yahoo browser.

Have you checked for viruses and spyware? Is your windows up to date? Have you messed with any virtual memory settings? How much RAM do you have? How many processes do you have running?

You say SBC Yahoo browser, you mean Internet Explorer right? Are you able to goto windowsupdate.com to update IE? I would recommend it.

Your whole computer shouldn't freeze unless there is something wrong somewhere else.

If the modem is on USB and has an Ethernet port, uninstall the modem software/drivers and connect it to Ethernet.

Then completely uninstall all the SBC Yahoo software, and set your DSL up using the XP new connection wizard - it's a broadband connection that requires a username and password - and use Internet Explorer and Outlook Express for browsing and email. Make sure you enable the XP firewall on your new connection if you don't have 3rd party firewall software, and install a good antivirus.

The CD that SBC gives you installs all kinds of junk that just gets in the way of everything. Nothing on there is necessary to install the service, and Windows comes with everything you need to use the service.

What modem do you have from SBC? I know of two people who had issues of freezing after upgrading to a new modem with SBC. Apparently SBC had to come out and make adjustments at the neighbor hood box (for lack of better term)for it to work properly after the upgrade.

If possible take your PC to a neighbors or friends and hook it up. See if you get the same problem. If not call SBC and ask them to fix it.

Just a possibility.

In both these cases the internet would just freeze. There was no reason to reboot. Did have to disconnect and then re-connect to re-establish connection.

thanks for your help,

Spybot has an 'immunizer' function that might be giving you trouble.
I haven't hear of any false positives but they're certainly possible.
Have you tried the most recent version that came out last week ?

after spending two hours on the phone with micosoft windows tech it was explained to me that spybot had its own spyware. and that something in that might be in conflict with my system. after trying ad aware one bug was found that spybot should have found. i hpoe this resolves my problem and helps somebody else.
