Can't read any Windows fonts!

I did a cleanup on my hdd using McAfee Quickclean. Must have done something to the Fonts. Upon reboot, I cannot read any words - fonts are all strange symbols, etc. If I play around and get lucky, I can get into an app and everything is ok except toolbars, etc. Internet same way - can read the sites but nothing Windows related. Conclude I must have erased Windows fonts or related.

Any ideas on how to repair?

I've come across this problem twice now. Once on a Win XP Home pc and again on a Win 2000 pc. From the research I have been able to find on this problem the only sure fire way to fix it is to (1) reinstall your OS or (2)upgrade your OS. It is a bit tricky since you can't read the set up words, but by following the normal flow of events, it tends to highlight the correct default boxes. As far as I know, Microsoft has yet to acknowledge this little snafu.

Thanks for the reply. Was thinking that XP had a repair option to select if booting off of the CD. Do you know? Though the result may be a reload of the OS....

XP has a few things you can try.

1. System Restore

2. Boot with CD, Repair

3. Boot with CD, Setup, then Repair

Does McAfee have an Undo?

I tried Repair Console. It took me to a C:\WINDOWS prompt. Did not know what to do. (For fun I tried the dir command and got what once may have been a list of directories but was really screwed up.) So, I tried Setup and Repair. It asked for product key. (Why?) Fed it that. Continued setup. Got to the point that it asked me if I wanted to register. I said no since I had done that before. Then it went to Users screen - to what I once had for my family. Selected my name. It "found" new hardware (printer) and installed. Now everything appears to be as it once was. Mail, Folding, everything. Alright! A pretty slick fix, actually.

GLC...THANKS!

btw, not sure about undo and McAfee. But will watch it next time.

Do yourself a favor and uninstall McAfee.

Have seriously considered that. Had an earlier episode right after I bought/installed it where it would not update. Went through quite a bit of effort including a lengthy manual uninstall. Not worth the trouble.....
