XP Pro / USB 2.0 Questions

Howdy

Just built up a new system for my bros friend,
Asus P4P800S mobo with Celeron 2.4GHZ 400FSB CPU,
256MB DDR400, 40GB WD 7200rpm with 8MB cache HDD,
CDRW\DVD combo drive and XP Pro. Needs more ddr yes, mobo supports up to 2GB, 400, 533 and 800 fsb ( HT ready
and supports P4 Prescott ) and supports P4 and Celeron to 3.6 +GHZ ( 8x/4x AGP , WiFi slot, 8x USB 2.0 ports [ 4 on rear I/O panel] etc etc ).

Using Leadtek Winfast 340T 128ddr ( nVidia GeForce 5200 )
AGP graphics and Hyundai 17" screen. All round a nice budget system ( Mid tower case ) which performs well.

I seem to have a problem with my last 4 USB 2.0 ports though
as XP doesn't seem to know how to load up the drivers for these.

Info I get in device manager is as follows :

Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D2, D4, D7,DE

and 4 Root Hub entries

following is what XP Pro can't install

Other Devices Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller

PCI bus 0 device 29 function 7

end of device manager info

The above is condensed from the device manager info.

For the first 4 USB 2.0 ports ( 1 to 4 ) which are in 2x
stacks of two on the rear I/O panel I seem to have a
Intel(R) 82801EB USB Host Controller for each port being :

24D2, 24D4, 24D7 and 24DE
which are PCI bus 0 device 29 functions 0 to 3

Then I have 4 root hub entries which seems to define my first 4 USB 2.0 ports.

I have tried using the USB 2.0 drivers that came on the mobo support CD but I get some message about using service pack 1
for USB 2.0 support. I understand that XP SP1 contains USB 2.0 support and maybe I need to install that ? But it seems XP Pro before SP1 already has USB 2.0 support BUT can't install my last 4 USB 2.0 ports ?????

The last 4 ports in question are accessible via two headers on the mobo and are either connected to a rear chassis\slot 2x USB port holder ( exra option ) and header cable or could be fed forward to a front panel kit. As far as I know each header supports 2x USB 2.0 ports.

I don't fully understand the structure of the USB system.
We seem to have a Host controller and root hub per port.
BUT if the first 4 ports above reside on the same PCI bus
and device number that tells me that the physical USB
chip or controller has maybe 4 logical or real controllers\root hubs per USB 2.0 main controller ( guessing ) ???

This would explain why device manager only shows one entry
for the USB 2.0 Controller device it can't install ( other devices above ) ? So the second main USB 2.0 controller handles the last 4 USB 2.0 ports which would show up as another 4 Host controllers and root hub entries if installed OK ???
I am assuming the 2nd main USB controller would be either on a different PCI bus number or at 0 and be a different device than 29 with again 4 different function numbers for whatever device number was assigned.

In short I don't get why these last 4 ports aren't being installed ??? I have checked my setup/BIOS and can't see that anything USB is disabled. XP Pro has the drivers for the 1st 4 ports but can't handle the last 4 ????

I am bamboozled !!!!!!

Anyone know what is wrong here or what I have maybe messed up ??? Anyone familiar with this mobo ?
Any and all ideas welcome.

I also need to find a good page(es) which covers the USB system comprehensively from both the hardware and Windows
software angles i.e. Can I connect 16 devices to one port or root hub ? Can I plug a 4 port hub off one USB port ?
Think I read it's like an old style daisy chain or sumthin ???

Can anyone shed a little light so I can get this USB system straight in my head ??? ( and in this new system ;O) ).

Any help much appreciated.

cheers

Whoops !!! - I had a mode set wrong in USB config in BIOS !!!

Howdy

Feeling a bit dumb after all the above !!! (
THere is a legacy Auto mode in the USB setup\BIOS which disables legacy USB where there are no devices connected !!!????

I only have a USB mouse connected right now.
All the USB must be on one chip on the mobo ???
But surely USB 2.0 isn't legacy ? I have a device connected on the 1st 4 ports so they aren't disabled but none connected on the last 4 which are USB 2.0 on the mobo ( 2x 2 port headers ).

Info from system below :

XP may be detecting the last 4 USB 2.0 ports now

Hardware Wizard

Intel(R) 82801EB USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 24DD

Different controller ID and now one host controller shows up and another 4 root hubs. Getting somewhere BUT

now hardware wizard can't find the following

Files Needed

usbehci.sys ???? where on XP CD or system ???

I don't know which path or where to look for this file ?

Maybe it's in one of the service packs 1 or 2.

Guess I need to install SP2 maybe which covers all of SP1
as well ???

Any ideas welcome.

getting there....................

Thanks

cheers

be sure that you installed the inf and other drivers for the motherboard too, a lot of thing won't work right till you do.

Yep did that

hey again

Yeah I installed the INF update stuff and other drivers off the mobo CD first time. Everything else is working on the system except the second enhanced USB 2.0 controller
( 24DD ) which obviously looks after the last 4 USB 2.0 ports
on the mobo ( accessible from two 2x USB 2.0 headers on the mobo ).

I have yet to install SP1 and the system won't set up the remaining USB ports as it wants usbehci.sys and other files which I guess are in that service pack ( damn ) !!!???

I guess there must be USB 2.0 and then USB 2.0 !!!

Nothing confusing about that BUT nothing surprises me about computers and tech anymore ( other than that at times it can work very well ;O) [ occasionally ]).

Other than that this system is real nice ( a budget gem ).

I better get at it ( have to deliver this thing today ).

Thanks again for your help.

cheers
