does anyone know of a good FREE registry fix tool for xp ... ive searched and looked but cant find one that they dont want a arm and a leg for.

I seem to post this recommendation quite frequently. The one I have used for over a year and has worked flawlessly with any os (98se, ME, XP Home, & XP Pro) is Registry Healer. Think the price is still $19.95. A free one that others have recommended is Reg Clean. Here's the link to RegHealer:
