XP and 98SE networking with ICS

I am setting up a home network and having trouble sharing the internet connection.

This is my setup.
Have a cable modem which connects to Machine 1.

XP on Machine 1---This is the main machine connecting to the net.

98SE on Machine 2.---This is my second machine connecting to the Machine 1 through a crossover cable(since I am not using a hub, I am not using a ethernet cable)

I have followed the setup procedures and done the following :

1. Installed ICS on machine #1.
2. Installed file and sharing on machine #2.
3. Same user account on both machines.
4. For now, switched off zonealarm etc.

I can share files and folders on both machines.
I can ping both machines from each other.
I can get to the internet from machine #1.

But from machine #2, I cannot get to the internet.

What else could be wrong in my setup?
Any suggestions on where to look?

Thanks
K

Hi kktk:

Here's a checklist for you:

Have you remembered the following on your XP:
1) Turn on Internet Connection Sharing from the sharing tab?
2) Do you have an IP address set? I am assuming you are choosing the default of 192.168.0.1

Have you remembered the following on your 98:
1) Ensure you have Client for Microsoft Networks enabled
2) Ensure that you have File/Print sharing enabled?
3) Ensure you have TCP/IP enabled?
4) Ensure that IP address is set to be obtained automatically?
5) Your gateway device is the IP address of your XP
6) Bindings should be both Client for MS Networks and File/Print sharing

When pinging to test, try pinging an address on the internet as well from your Win98
7) In your IE setup for 98, setup for LAN access to the internet
8) For LAN settings, ensure that the options for automatically detect settings, use automatic config. scripts and proxy servers are all OFF.

They are simple checks but just run through them to see if your machines are properly configured.

HTH

I got it work finally.

All those things were checked, but something was messed up.

I reverted my drives back, did a reinstall, and then it worked ok the first time!!! Go figure!
