New poster, bad problem, can you help?
Howdy all...
well this is what happened. I formatted my hard drive to install XP home. not paying attention I chose to boot from cd after it had gone thru its' setup cycle. So being dumb I knew I had formatted already and chose to setup in a different location and leave the previous setup intact. So now I realized what happened, I booted from hard drive and setup went thru. So now when I turn on pc, it asks which OS I want to use. It is win xp home on both choices. One works and the other gives an error. So I guess I would like to know is how to get rid of the choice that doesn't work and it will bypass that question at start up. Sorry for the long read but I can't find any answers.. I sat thru another re-format and install but it didn't fix it.. thanks for taking the time... slotcarz Last edited by slotcarz; 05-21-2004 at 10:12 PM. |

Well I think you delete one of the XP entry's in the boot.ini file, I think that is how I did it. Guess just make sure ya know which one gives the error and delete that one. Hope thats what your problem is since it is an easy fix.

Thanks for the quick reply,,
I found the boot.ini file. do I have to just delete the entry in the file? here is my config --- timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect I would assume that partition '2' would be the one I want to keep? hopefully that will do it thanks again... slotcarz |

Well I dont know which one ya need to keep... if ya let it sit for 30 seconds does it go to the working partition? If so then yes, keep partition 2 and ditch the other.

Since you just did the reinstall and haven't added any apps, etc, why not just reformat and reinstall correctly. I think it would be faster, easier, and with less chance of problems. Only takes 45 min or so.

Remove partition 2.
Then boot up into recovery console and type in FIXBOOT. That should get you going. If not, then boot up into setup and remove both partitions and install it on one partition. |

Thanks for all the responses!
This is what I did... bad move.. I opened up the boot.ini file and deleted the line: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect and then the line: default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS thinking that it didn't need to know that partition 2 was the default because there would not be another one for it to check against.. boom... wrong move.. screwed it up.. so I had already reformatted and reinstalled like I said above and it didn't work. So I booted of cd again and went into the setup to repair it.. You would think that would be the smart thing to do. wrong.. it started installing on the other partition and now I will have 2 installs on the hard drive when it finishes.. I didn't want to abort that one, it should be done in a short time... So how do I partiton my hard drive or remove both partitions to fix it??? this sucks.. I'll be hanging around for a bit to get your advise.. thanks guys.. slotcarz |

if he is getting the dual boot question, would he be able to change the settings in bios to skip the partition to boot from?

well whatever I did it fixed it...I went thru setup and chose to repair xp. it went thru the setup proceedure and asked for my COA again and saved the few programs I had installed, all my settings and didn't eat up disk space like I thought it would. even gave me some back... not gonna do that again..
thanks for helping out... slotcarz |
