no i have never taken the tour.
i don't want to be a burden, just thought someone would type a little something informative - i am not the first to ask when the answers are easily had in the help files.
i guess i have a generalization of help files being less than adequate.
thanks
alan

The Fax function for XP is not a network fax, meaning it will not fax over broadband - you need a modem and a phone line. It is a rather well featured fax driver, complete with a stable fax printer driver to "print" from any application as a fax.

Check this out: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;306550 for more information.

Bailey, there isnt an obligation to type out an answer, however if you are going to type an answer please make sure that your answer is something that is usable. Typing 2 yes' and then asking the person to read the help is not help. By the way, if you do care to check the offline help files for XP, it does NOT address the issues that tacoeater asked here.

to send a fax as a standard fax machine you do use a modem and a phone line

yes you can use fax over the internet, there are many fax services avaible that let you send and recive fax's as easy as a e-mail.

type FAX in the google search engene and you will find many referances as to how to do it.

sorry if my first post was taken wrong.

i do hazily remember trying to find this in help a few months ago and gave up, probably, before i discovered it to be not too informative.
bailey i am ok with your reply, for one thing it kept the post going and more information was offered.
the customer i was trying to research this for has only broadband and a cellphone. no land line in the house at all. he would like to discover a way or some software to fax with the resources he has.
thanks everyone
alan

like I said, just google the word FAX and you will find a large number of on line fax services that will do what they need.
its as easy as sending a e-mail

here is just one example of fax service on the internet.
this was just a random pick and nothing implied by it.

hope it helps you

With only broadband and a cellphone, you will need an Internet fax service, the XP fax service does require an analog phone line and a dialup type modem. The one I've worked with the most is Efax.

This is a pay service - there is a monthly and a per-page fee for sending faxes. Receiving is free, that comes through your e-mail.
