win98se installation for non cd-rom boot
I'm trying to install win98se on my parents very OLD pc but can't seem to launch the setup from DOS. I have already used a boot floppy to get things going, formatted the C: drive and copied the files from the boot CD to a folder win98 on the C: drive but I can't seem to get the setup file to launch. I was under the impression I had to type something like C:win98\setup but I just get a bad command/file message. I know the files are on the C: drive ina folder called win98 but I just don't know how to make them run.
Any ideas? Thanks, Craig. |

You said your parents PC is OLD. Exactly what hardware are we talking about here? Also, why can't you install Win98SE directly from the OS CD? let us in on the answers to these questions.

I can't boot from the os cd cos the cd-rom is non bootable (I've checked in the BIOS) and when I say old that's all I mean.
I have no idea about the hardware! I have downloaded a boot disk from http://www.drd.dyndns.org/fr_index.html?/disks.html and used that to get access to the cd-rom. from there I formatted the c drive and then copied the necessary files over (with the commands md c:\win98 and then copy *.* c:\win98 . I took this info from the tutorials at http://www.windowsreinstall.com/ but my success is foiled at the last hurdle. It tells me I should change to the win98 folder on the c drive by typing c:win98 at the X: prompt (X being my cd-rom letter) but that takes me to C:\ NOT C:\win98 as promised. And from there I try to launch setup but get the error message. Craig. |
