Hi,
I'm building a new PC for my buddy, he has a retail version of XP Home I installed on his old PC. When he calls MS will the PC need to be already built or can we do it before I build it? TIA

Yea, it'll load and set up just fine. You'll probably get the annoying activation reminder popping up a couple times.

Reinstalls don't normally require reactivation, but moving the XP from one system to another changes the hardware that is identified with that particular registration number and does require reactivation.

Thanks Panama Red and bailey, I just didn't want it to keep annoying me while I was trying to install it on the new build as obviously it is going to be totally different from the old one.

It will ask you at the end of the installation if you want to activate. You can just click No and it will run fine. Windows XP can run up to 30 days without activating it. It will be popping up the activation reminder every time you boot, but you can dismiss it easily tho. On the 31st day it will refuse to run if you haven't activated it and the only thing you can do with your PC is running the Activation.
So, to answer the question: you shan't have any problems if you don't activate right away.

Thanks Nuclear Krusader 30 days will be way more than we'll need, as soon as it is up and running he'll call MS and notify them of the change.

He may not even have to call - an online activation should work if it hasn't been activated in the past 120 days.
