Win 98 SE missing files on startup
I've just installed Windows 98 SE on a friends computer and when I boot I get an error saying the following files are missing and am told to press any key to continue:
vnetbios.vxd vredir.vxd dfs.vxd Then as Windows is loading up I get a textbox error saying the dynamic library isn't working: msnp32.dll is missing and Microsoft Network is not available When I was in the latter stages of installation there were some files I had to skip as Windows couldn't find them on the CD. Any help eliminating these problems would be much appreciated! JTH

Those are Windows Networking files. You can try removing your network adapter in Safe Mode, and reinstalling the driver on reboot.
[. . . if that doesn't do it, you can also try removing and then reinstalling Dial-Up Networking from the Add/Remove Programs ..Setup tab.. in Control Panel . . . ] . . . Gary |

I had (i think the same problem), after I deleted some programs without using add/remove programs. The problem is that there are references to these files in either win.ini / system.ini or the registry.
Open win.ini / system.ini from the windows directory in notepad and search for entries in the ini files containing the file names you posted, save the existing .ini files giving them another extension such as .bak, then delete the lines with those files listed in them. Save the file and reboot. If that doesnt get rid of the problem, click Start>run> type in "regedit", export a backup copy of the registry and then search the registry for references to those files, if you find them delete them. Reboot and all should be OK The reason I said to save the files before editing is if it all goes bad or if you accidentally delete the wrong lines. you can just copy the .bak files over the .ini files to get up and running again
