Windows Explorer refresh problem

My Windows XP Home system was working great until a couple of weeks ago, when suddenly the Windows Explorer (My Computer) window began refreshing every few seconds, making it difficult if not impossible to select a file from a list of files longer than one window. Almost as soon as I can scroll down the list, the window refreshes and the top of the list is displayed again, and selected file focus is lost.
I have been using Zone Alarm for a long time, and have installed eTrust anti-virus software. I've also run SpyBot Search and Destroy and Adaware to eliminate. Right now all these tools are not finding anything to explain the Windows Explorer problem.
