Notepad not working
Usually you have problems with higher level programs...but now I am having a problem with Notepad. The program works, it opens and what not, but the problem comes when I save. I'll save a file to my desktop for example...but notepad won't be able to open it back up. When I double click it it comes up with the Select Program froma List or Use apropriate webservice deal...when I clcik select program to select notepad it is listed there, but not with the notepad icon, just a little 'blue/whiite window icon' Anyone know how I can get around this? Thanks...
If I can I will post a screenshot of it. |

I had the same problem, but it went away on its own. It would be interesting to see what I did to fix it, if anything...

Try this:
Right click on the .txt file you created, and choose properties. In the dialog box that comes up, hit the button to designate which app that file opens up with. Choose Notepad, and hit OK. |

Have you tried reassociating .txt with notepad? By the way, confirm that notepad.exe resides in your Windows folder.
I would also recommend you start a spyware scan on your system or post back with a hijackthis log. |

Actually, i think my problem was a little different. Whenever i tried to open a txt file, that little 'browsing' window would come up and it said it couldnt find notepad.
But it went away so its all good i guess. Mike |

It looks like you are saving it without the .txt extension. Windows needs file extensions to tell what kind of file it is.

In the Save As dialog, under "Files of Type", select Text Files (.txt) as the file type you wish to save the files as.
Another thing you can try is to enclose the filename+extension in double quotes "filename.txt".

Have you run a virus scan? Might be a good idea to do so.

I've had this problem at least a dozen times. I don't screw around with it because I have more important things to do. If notepad wants to play rough than so be it. I just simply delete all shortcuts from the startup and desktop and then create new shortcuts and dump them into the startup and desktop and that's it and it works fine. No muss, no fuss just nipp this thing right in the bud. Then it works perfectly.
