Vista upgrade compatability?
SO I am building a new computer, and I will be dual booting Vista x64 and XP. Right now, I have a dell with vista, and I have the re-installation CD for Vista that came from dell. If I purchase the upgrade version of these two OS's, will I be able to install them using the dell vista disk? Or will I have to get and XP full version and then the vista upgrade? Or will I have to get a vista upgrade and the XP full since you can't "upgrade" (since its a downgrade according to M$) from vista to XP? Thanks!

You can't reuse your Dell cd on another pc. So you need two new Full Install cd's..

GAH dangit. What about just the XP full install first (I would put that on HDD 1) and then an upgrade for Vista 64x on HDD 2?

When you "upgrade" an OS, you're suppost to stop using the original...Thus the reasons upgrades sell for less$$.

You can purchase upgrade discs of each OS as they can both be "clean" installed and you can install each on a seperate HDD.
Actually, that is preferable. XP will require you to provide a earlier version of Windows to make the install. Any older version will work. i.e. 95-98-ME I would suggest installing XP first if you plan to dual-boot. MS offers instructions for dual (triple) booting OS's so I assumed that it was permissible to run both on one PC. Last edited by not important; 05-06-2008 at 05:55 PM. |
