Missing/corrupt startup file

Hi.New to site.Hope someone can help
Problem with daughters laptop.
Running Vista Home Premium

Only had it 3 months. Can't find installation cd's that came with it.

On startup just says windows didn't start correctly due to file

WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

status 0xx000014c

being missing or corrupt.

Will we have to purchase the full version and reinstall ?
Can we downgrade to XP ?

At a loss what to do next.

Thanx in advance

Do a Google search for "Vista Recovery Disc". Download the Vista Recovery file, burn it as an an ISO and boot from it and follow the directions.

You "might" be able to use the laptop copy if it is a Vista disc. I don't know of a manufacture recovery disc will work. It won't hurt to give it a try.
