general vista maintenence stuff

Hey everyone.. well I just recently got a new laptop. Buying this laptop is my first experience with windows vista. the guy at the store told me that for an extra $150 bucks, they'd do some maintenence, and add all the virus/malware/spyware protection. He was saying that Vista has some extra processes that they get rid of to make it run smoother, but I figured rather than pay him, some people here would know some of the general stuff I have to do.

I put spyware blaster, and AVG antivirus software on it already. and I already know about ad-aware, and spybot s&D. Is there any other stuff I'll wanna put on here? and are there processes I should delete like the guy was talking about? thanks in advance for the help!

Check this place out:
Black Viper's Windows Vista Services (SP1).
Why pay those guys for stuff you can do yourself?

Other general advice.

Defrag your hard drive at least once a week.

If this is a new laptop, there's probably a lot of stuff you want to remove as well. I'm talking about all the junk trialware, crapware, etc that comes preinstalled on most new PCs. Here's a tool that many find handy in getting rid of this junk:

I have found that over the years disabling services has caused me problems and doesn't effect performance in a positive way. With XP, I did disable a couple that were a security issue but for the others I just leave them alone.

I'll admit I might get carried away on disabling services but I never saw a performance gain.

Google Vista Tips and Tricks or Vista Tweaks. There are several sites that have many performance gains for Vista.
