Windows Vista Backup and Restore
Anyone used the Windows Vista Backup and Restore?
I invested in a 250GB USB WD HD and need a reliable back up software. I am not so much interested in whether Windows System gets backed up. Just my personal files. Preferably a back up software with an option that won't compress my files. Any good recommended backup software or is Windows backup system good enough? I use Windows Vista Home Premium. dave Last edited by y2kman; 06-20-2008 at 10:31 PM. |

I just don't trust them to reliably backup my valuable data. I do however, trust Acronis True Image software which I've used for years to backup my entire system as well as my valuable data. I can't vouch for the reliability of any combo of software & USB external drive becasue I've tried many of them and sometimes experience problems. I prefer to install the backup drive internally which has proved to be 100% reliable and the fastest backup method. I'm not saying NOT to try the Microsoft backup utilities becasue you can never have too many backups. Try the Microsoft backups but don't solely rely upon it. Get Acronis True Image and I bet you will find it much better and more reliable than the Windows Vista backup system. It's best not to rely upon any single backup either. Always have at least 2 backups, preferrably 3 backups in case you go to restore and discover your backup fails to restore. To what extremes you go to all depends upon how valuable you think your data is or how much effort it would take to reinstall the OS and all the applications and customizatons. ---pete--- |

Same as Petef56. I have learned, the hard way, NOT to trust backups via MS. I also suggest Acronis. If you have a Seagate or Maxtor HDD, you can download a free version of Acronis.
Disc Wizard for Seagate drives or Max Blast for Maxtor. |

I always back up to several sources guys so no problem there.
I use a laptop and am always traveling and why the USB option works best for me. Very small and lightweight. Thanks for the tips. Appreciate it. dave |
