Black screen on boot
I just installed Vista service pack 1 and everything worked fine. Vista then told me I had three additional, optional updates to install, which I did. One was a driver (I think so at least) for my belkin wireless adapter, which failed to install. The other two were successful, so I told it to try again, and it began creating a restore point.
I got tired of Vista creating a restore point to install a driver, so I clicked stop and nothing happened. I rebooted the computer and it went to the "installing 1 new update" splash screen. When it finally rebooted, I got a completely black screen. I did a hard reboot (held the power button) and I got the motherboard splash screen along with the usual boot screens. Even the "Windows did not shutdown properly, start Windows normally?" screen appeared, although that was it. From there i continue to get a completely black screen on bootup. What in the world did I do?

I just booted into the last known good configuration and got back into Windows. What do you think is going on?

I would forget about downloading drivers from windows. And I usually read the optional updates to see if they apply to me or not. I find that most don't.
SP1 should have caused any problems though. I suspect it was one of the other updates.

I've had a similar problem but I can't even get into the OS. From what I've read, it is a common issue among SP1 users and the solution is just to restart.

I have the same problem at the moment! Just installed a wireless PCI card into my computer, got 19 required updates and installed them then shut down as usual. Now the computer will get to the loading page and freeze. Was able once to get into safe mode and use the backup program. But the downloads installed on their own and now in the same predicament. Any info on this matter, or how to fix without formatting would be a help!!!
I'm running a Gigabyte P35-DS3R with Quad core Q6600 chip, 4Gig RAM, Geforce8500GT 512MB GDDR2 VGA card, and a Western Digital 500Gig hard drive. Last edited by slads1983; 07-01-2008 at 04:05 AM. Reason: spelling error |

The reason why your Windows Vista must be creating a restore point before installing the drivers is so that you can return your computer back to the position when it was working fine if anything goes wrong after adding or removing any software or driver into your computer.
Can you manually make a restore point? Just see if you can boot your computer into safe mode or not? If you can ,then use the system restore and see if that helps. It seems more of a driver issue rather than software issue. Did you install SP1 from internet? Last edited by ITlover; 07-06-2008 at 10:03 AM. Reason: adding more information |
