Can't turn on network discovery

I had to reinstall everything after SP1 installation failed twice on this laptop. Now I am trying to enable file sharing with my home network. It worked with my installation before but now when I go to the Network and Sharing Center, check the button to turn on network discovery, I get a reply window saying "The parameter is incorrect".

I am connected to the network since I can go on the internet. What is wrong here? It wasn't this much trouble to enable file sharing first time I got this laptop.

Well I supposedly fixed that first problem by stating my network was private. but now I have the same problem going down the list to file sharing. I can't do it - keep getting the "Parameter is Invalid" message on this. Why does M$ have to make this so difficult????

I seem to have it solved finally, no thanks to the help M$ gives. Making sure I specify my laptop is in the same workgroup as my desktops helps. Then rebooting finally gave me the ability to enable file sharing.
