BOOTMGR is missing

Hi all. I've got a horrible problem with my girlfriends laptop. It had Vista Home Basic installed and is giving the message BOOTMGR is missing. However the laptop was not supplied with a Windows disk or a restore disk. Is there a way of fixing it or is it gonna be a case of buying Windows again?
