Video on vista screensaver

I'm pulling pics and videos by network from another computer.. works great, except..

If it's a video from our camcorder (.mpg), it plays on the screensaver..

If it's from a trailcam (.avi), it won't play.

If I click on either video in the folder, Windows media player will play either one with no problem.

I can't find anything under Vista help about this.

When you say "screensaver", are you perchance refering to Dreamscene (where Vista plays a video as your wallpaper or desktop background)?

If so, to the best of my knowledge, Vista Dreamscene only supports video files in the MPEG and WMV formats. You will not be able to play AVI files that way.

However, THIS ARTICLE from www.mydigitallife.com suggests a rather nifty workaround, if you want to try it.

I'm using the screensaver in Vista.. I clicked on "photos" .. then linked it to "my pictures".. and all folders.

The screensaver says it'll do pics and video ..

I have it on random so it'll pull pics and videos intermingled..

The videos I took with my camcorder play fine..

The videos I have that were from trailcams, which are .avi will not play.. they just show a generic filmstrip until the next pic comes up..

But if I go into Windows media player, both types of videos play.. and from what I've read, it seems that the .avi should work in screensaver. All the videos are about 15 - 25 seconds long.

Hi

You might try downloading an AVI to WMF converter and see if the file will play after it is converted my guess is that it doesn't support the AVI format.

I think there are several that you can try for free and see if it works or not.

I'll look for some converters..

Do you think Codecs will help or are they basically for windows media player?? I don't have any trouble seeing the videos if I use Windows media player..

Thanks.. I have a program that will convert files for photos, but I tried with the video and it wouldn't do it..

I'm not sure about downloading codecs.. it's a new computer and I hate to download a ton of software right now. I've still got to get rid of the crap trial software that comes with it!

The program you linked to goes onto XP, so I'll download it on my older computer..which has all the videos on it.

Thanks again!

Didn't install correctly for me...

Bomar, it says it is supported by Vista, so I installed it. States .dll is missing, so I uninstalled it. I would try it on XP as you mentioned to see if you have any luck. I've never had any luck converting video formats so if you find on that works, let me know.
