Vista Home Upgrade
I recently replaced my old computer with a Dell Inspiron 530S that came with Vista Home Basic. I had previously purchased the Anytime Upgrade disc and Windows Vista Ultimate 32 and 64 bit. I tried to install first the Anytime Upgrade without success and then the Vista Ultimate upgrade but both of them wanted to reformat my hard disc to install Vista Premium or the Anytime Upgrade, which I definitely don't want to do.
Any suggestions? |

Get Windows Vista: Windows Anytime Upgrade FAQ
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...grade-faq.aspx What happens to my settings, programs, and files when I upgrade? Before you upgrade, close all open programs and save open files. The upgrade setup application will reboot your computer several times, so any unsaved work will be lost. Except for when upgrading to the Windows Vista N editions, the upgrade process preserves your settings, programs, and saved files. As a standard precaution, we recommend that you back up your computer. If you have a Windows Vista N edition, Windows Vista will be reinstalled during the upgrade. Your settings will be erased; however, your programs and files will be preserved. You should back up prior to upgrading.

I too have just received my Anytime Upgrade DVD. I was reading thru the FAQ that was provided by Ezy and I had a question on one of them.

What does this mean exaclty? Will I be able to upgrade my 32 bit version to 64bit with this upgrade disc? |

No means no can do....Your upgrade disc must match your current system type.

If that is not possible, then what is this "upgrade" disk good for?

So lets say that I currently have Home Basic. Which from what I understand is 32 bit.
I use this disk to upgrade to Home Premium, would I still be stuck at 32bit or would I be able to install the 64bit version? I do not have it with me, but (I think) printed on the disk it says something about 64bit. I think it says something like 64bit version only, but dont quote me on that. Is Home Premium 64bit? |

There are 32 and 64 bit versions of all of the vista versions.
And if you have 32 installed now, then according the the link that was posted above, you can only upgrade the version to another 32 bit version. |

Well it looks like the "Upgrade" disk that I got from Microsoft is not going to work for me.
Printed on the disk are the words (this disk contains the 64bit verison only) or something like that. When I put the disk in the drive I get an error. I do not remember the message but I am not able to use this disk with my current version of Vista. |
