AVG causes no boot

PC kept getting to the "welcome" screen, then rebooted itself and same thing. When it finally went past the screen the monitor was blank. Went into Safe Mode and would boot to desktop but took forever. Tried accessing Windows Defender from the "help" menu, scrolled to "stop programs from launching at start-up" but wouldn't go to WD. From safe mode I uninstalled AVG on a whim, rebooted and all back to normal. Don't know why I chose that particular program to uninstall but it worked. Now have no anti-virus program. Had the latest AVG for quite awhile with no problems. What got me was not being able to access WD in control panel in safe mode. Is there another way to stop progs from loading at start-up? And wonder what the deal was/is?

Avira is a good freebie...

Most apps like AVG have an option to scan on boot...Maybe you installed an older version?
