Error In Licensing Protocol

Strange Problem.

When using remote desktop connection on a vista business acer notebook to RDP onto a windows 2000 terminal server I recieve the following error. (Note that this connection works fine on xp clients even ones with service pack 3)

"The Remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol. Please try connecting to the remote computer again or contact your system administrator."

This is a brand new notebook recently added to the local small business server 2003 domain running ISA 2004. Older notebooks like the 2 year old toshiba's with xp pro sp3 can connect fine. I also tried installing xp into a virtual machine on the problem notebook and had the same issue when using xp pro sp3 virtualy. I had the client added to the domain with the firewall client and all software use by the other clients that can connect with no problems.

My last test of the day was to copy the virtual machine to the server then I downloaded it onto a working notebook and installed the VM on this laptop. Laptop connects fine with it's host version of xp pro sp3, but the virtual pc had the same error as above (licensing protocol).

It's got me stumped as my boss can connect to the termianal server from his vista business notebook, and it has also been added to another sbs2003 domain an it still works fine.

thanks for any input!

I googled: "error in the licensing protocol" and found tons of hits.

I finally found the answer!!

On the user's computer,
Click on Start and run. Then type regedit
drill down in the following directory
+Hkey_Local_Machine

+Software

+Microsoft

and delete +Mslicensing folder -----ONLY!

Then, do a right-click on the Remote Desktop connection shortcut, and then click on Run as Administrator.

User should now be able to access Remote desktop again.

Please referr to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/187614

Explains it more in detail.

EzyStvy Thank you for your research.

My googling etc also led me to try that fix with no luck.

I deleted the mslisencing key all together from Hkey_local_machine/software/microsoft and restarted, created a new direct shortcut to mstsc.exe and ran it by right clicking "run as administrator". I get the same message (error in licensing protocol) with this method as well.

I checked the registry and it rebuilt the mslisencing key on the restart. I was confident that fix would solve my problem but it did not.

More information.

It seems that any computer that connected to the terminal server (vista or xp) up until a few weeks ago could connect fine. It's only when a computer goes to make an initial connection that I get the error (like the new notebook). So I ruled out the notebook as being the problem, so it is a setting on the Terminal Server. I also tried connecting from my office with a notebook that had never connect and I received the same licensing protocol error.

Anyone have any ideas?
