Where are you saving the file to? Is it to some network location or a stored default location or are you specifically saving it somewhere? Try saving it to a location like the desktop. Do you have adequate rights to the folder the document is being saved to?

What happens when you right click the file? Does it show you a list of options including "open with"? Do you have adequate rights to the folder you are saving it to?

There are also documented occurrences with some antivirus engines .. notable some versions of AVG. Try disabling AVG and trying again.

For what it's worth, I'll share an experience with Office 2007.

A customer of mine complained that he had saved some files in Ms Office 2007 format, and now the program was refusing to open them. I can't recall all the details but we were never able to find a fix and he lost all his data in those files. He switched to Open Office and he hasn't had any problems since.

Office 2007 des not seem as stable as previous versions and personally, I need 99.9% reliability when it comes to opening files I previously saved. From what I've seen, Office 2007 does not meet that requirement.

It would be interesting to know what happens if you get a Word doc off another machine to see if you can open and re-save it.
