File too large for destination file system

My cousin has a Lenovo laptop with Vista Home Premium on it with a Core 2 Duo Processor and 2 GB RAM. He just purchased a Western Digital 640 GB external My Book hard drive. He tried to copy/move a file that is 4.33 GB in size and got a message stating "Too Large for Destination File System. Type ISO File. Size 4.33 GB." My question is how can he copy that file from his Laptop to the WD exteranl drive? Thanks.

Betting that the external is formatted FAT32 that has a 4gig limit.

Formatting the drive to NTFS would do the trick.

No.

You will lose all data when you format.

What you can do is, save all the data on the external drive to the main hard drive, then format the external and move the data back.

Actually, you can convert filesystem without losing data. Simply open command prompt and type

convert x: /fs:ntfs

where x is the letter of the drive you want to convert. It might pay to back up any critical data just in case.
