noob install win 7 ?

I want to install win 7 on my second hard drive, I have downloaded the file and burned the iso dvd. I got the dvd boot started and then chickened out because I didnt get a screen that asked where i wanted to install the o.s. Its my first time installing a o.s., I have installed lots of programs and had no real problems, I got spooked that this was going to overright my current o.s. So my question is will I get a prompt asking where to put this file? ( the second hard drive is clean and running already)

I'm currently running xp home, I checked and my hardware is more than enough to run win7

Are you wanting to dual boot XP and 7? Personally, and particularly if it is your only/main PC, I would disconnect the XP HDD and install 7 on the clean HDD.

After you enter the key code you'll come to a screen showing both drives...You select the one you want to install it on...

BUT, I would do as not important mentioned....Win 7 will install it's boot loader program....And when Win 7 expires in August and quits working......XP will probably boot ok but could cause some issues.

On a test machine, I did a dual boot which worked fine. As for removing it when the time comes...I'm guessing it would be a matter of removing the boot.ini file, then if needed, booting off and XP CD into the repair console and running fixboot and fixmbr.

But, like I said, that's a guess which may or may not actually work.

It's highly recommended that you don't do a dual boot with anything other than a machine you use for testing, or on a seperate drive and disconnect your current OS drive.

You did learn something New today
And you're a smart guy...

If you have a pretty beefy machine...2 to 3 gigs of ram - plenty of free drive space, you could install Win 7 on a Virtual Machine.

Vmware (haven't used)
VirtualPC
VirtualBOX (my favorite)
(second two are free)

Then you'd learn a bunch of stuff
