Vista and an Older PC

I've been kicking around installing Vista Home Premium on this older PC. I ran the Microsoft PC Scan to see if Vista would work and other then a couple issues, they say it would work.

Main thing is that there are no drivers for my HP4400c scanner for Vista. I could always hook it up to XP machine I have here when I would need to scan.

Also, the built in LAN on my Asus P4P800 mobo doesn't seem to have drivers available either. I was thinking of buying a new ethernet card. my question is, what is M/S Vista Certified? I see that on some ethernet cards.

If any body else has installed Vista on an older machine, please tell me of any problems you have had.

Thank you,

Carl

Hi Carl. I first ran Vista on my P4P800-Dx a year or so ago. I had no problem with the lan driver. The only issue I had was the Soundmax driver for the audio. It would not allow 5.1 speakers to work. Turns out it's an issue that several folks had and there is no fix. If you're using a 2.0 or 2.1 speaker set up, you should have no problems at all. I wouldn't by a lan card until you try the Vista built in driver first. Only advice I have is install at least 2Gb of ram.

Thanks for the good info Panama.
I run 5.1 speakers but through a Creative sound card and the scan said there would be no problem with that except for the game port which I don't use.

My LAN is the 3Com Gigabit 3C940 on this Asus board. Is that what yours had?

I was planning on getting two gigs of memory so no problem there either.

Thanks again,

Carl

Yup, that's the same lan mine had, Carl. Funny you should mention the sound card cuz that's what I had to do in order to get the 5.1 working. Sounds like you'll have it all handled. Good luck.
