Sure enough - it's available at a p2p site I checked. I'm content to wait until May 5th however.

Not sure why the rush to grab a copy two weeks earlier than from M$. Isn't there a chance those copies have been tampered with?

Windows 7 to have an 'XP mode'
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10227533-56.html

For some time now, the company has been quietly building a "Windows XP mode" that uses virtualization to allow Windows 7 to easily run applications designed for Windows XP. According to sources familiar with the product, the application compatibility mode is built on the Virtual PC technology.

According to the SuperSite report, written by bloggers Paul Thurrott and Rafael Rivera, the XP mode won't come in the box with Windows 7, but will be made available as a free download for those who buy the professional, enterprise, or "ultimate" versions of Windows 7.

Then there's this part

How many Intel CPUs will fail the XP Mode test in Windows 7?
http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=946

Some of the most popular PCs on the market today, equipped with fast and powerful dual- and quad-core CPUs, won’t be able to use the vaunted Windows XP Mode in Windows 7.

I downloaded it ok, and burned a dvd, it installs fine to a point where it is starting the services and then stops with a error that it cannot confiqure the system,
maybe it won't run on my computer, vista runs great on it.

should I install vista and then do a upgrade with w7 ?

I believe you need to do a clean install of Windows 7, bailey.

I had similar problems as you when I tried to load the beta version. It got to the same point as you and then failed. Turned out to be the video drivers for my E630i motherboard. I had to run a vga cable only. If I used a dvi, I got a crash.

And then this:

Windows 7 RC now available free, includes weird ticking time bomb
http://dvice.com/archives/2009/05/windows-7-rc-no.php

Just when we thought Microsoft was getting uncharacteristically generous, we got this nasty surprise: that free Windows 7 release candidate Microsoft is giving away to everyone today has a nasty time bomb ticking inside it. Beginning on March 1, 2010, the operating system will begin shutting down every two hours. If you're using one of the beta versions of Windows 7, the hourly shutdown game starts much sooner, on July 1, 2009.

reinstalled

this ia a clean install.

MB asus p5pkl am/ps

I am using a mobil rack and tray's for the hard drives

each OS I install is on its own 80 gig hard drive.

the hard drive is clean, nothing on it at all and formatted ntfs.

well just to be sure, I downloaded it again and burned another dvd,
it did the same thing at the same point.

so I cleaned the drive and installed vista home pre. and tried to install w7 as a upgrade, well it still did the same thing at the same point.

I gave up on it and reinstalled debian 5.0 on the drive, at least it works

bottom line, W7 has a long way to go to be very useable, it was a total waste of dvd's and a lot of time for me.
