Windows 7, What?

Hi

I hate to sound like a dolt but what the heck is Windows 7?

I'm getting ready to buy a new computer and I am not a big fan of Vista based on what I have been told.

I came upon this web page that says that Windows 7 will be available this month.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/

Is this a new independent operating system that replaced Vista?

I don't know where I have been but I didn't hear anything other them rumors about a new operating system sometime.

Now this makes it seem like it is here and has been available as a beta for some time.

Can someone just explain in a few sentences what the deal really is?

I looked for a Windows 7 forum but don't see one.

Thanks for the help.

Mike

Hi

I downloaded Window 7RC and made an install DVD.
I will install it as a dual boot on my second hard drive as soon as I finish the stuff I'm working on now.

I can't take a chance on having my computer go down until the work is out but I have everything backed up and a ghost image of both drives so I shouldn't get into too much trouble.

I thought I'd try in out on my old computer before I get a new one, if I like it I'll just install RC right away as a dual boot on the new one when I get it and then update when it goes live.

Thanks for the help.

Mike

I stuck a 32 bit copy in an old DELL with a P4 and GMA 950 just to see what would happen.
It works perfectly.
Even the AERO stuff and THAT wasn't supposed to be!

Note that the RC (Release Candidate) has an expiration date, so you won't be able to use it forever like a retail or OEM copy. It is for evaluation purposes only.

By then I will have a new computer with a legit copy installed.
In the mean time I can find out how it works and skip Vista.

In fact if it works fine I will install it on my new computer when I get it in a month or so before I put in anything else and start fresh with it.

Thanks for the help.
