Windows 7 thoughts [POLL]
So what we all think of Windows 7?
Personally I think it's faster than XP. |

Here is a shot in the arm for ya. My spare dell with a P4 1.9GHZ processor boots a lot quicker than the one in my sig, with windows7. I how ever am running Win7 on my current system (down due to bad md) and do like it a lot better than Vista..

No vote just yet. Just downloaded it and will see in a few days how it's going. I have extremely limited experience with vista so it may be a jump to Win 7.

I have no issues with windows Vista after SP1, to me even though windows 7 is ok I fail to see why Microsloft needed to come up with another OS.
From a system builder's point of view it's not a good thing after we have struggled with Vista for almost 2 years before they got it working right. We been fighting hard to get customers to accept Vista, now we have a new Bill Gates concoction to pitch. Wished I could sell 100% Ubuntu systems and drop Microsoft like a bad habit but I can't

You have a point there Kalil, but after 4 hours of use since yesterday, I have found no bugs and everything works correctly. I think they MAY have got this one correct

All I'm seeing is VISTA with a suck Taskbar and more stuff to disable and more ways to go around your arse to get to your elbow.

When I was using Win7 32bit, I have had a few problems, including it not recognizing my other drive, and occasional, burps with IE. Then when I installed Win7 64bit in beta, I had no issues at all.. Now when my motherboard comes back tomorrow, I will then install Win7 RC.

I've been using Win7 Beta since its re lease, I've only had a few hiccups, and lockups. I'm currently downloading the RC, and will install it either tonight or tomorrow. But hopefully M$ has got there ducks in a row with Win7; only time will tell, but I'm pleased so far.

I'm haven't tried my yet, but if you just installed it, and are having that issue, I would just ignore it. Or see if your virus scanner gives that option to ignore..

http://www.pcworld.com/article/16448...enchmarks.html Of course that's on an RC; the performance of the finished product may be better. My personal opinion, Windows 7 is Vista SP2 with a different name because Vista was so poorly received. |

I have been using Windows 7 exclusively on three different machines (sig, older desktop, and laptop) and I have absolutely no complaints. I think it is the best OS Microsoft as released in a long time. I will never go back to Vista or XP. The performance is great even on the 6 year old AthlonXP 1800 system with 1GB of RAM.
I really like the interface. Some people don't like change but I think the taskbar is great. I love being able to pin frequently used programs to the taskbar and the fact that I can drag and drop to reorder taskbar items. I do tweak it slightly. I change the option "Taskbar buttons" in the taskbar properties to "Combine when taskbar is full" so I can have text as opposed to just icons. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...Ho/Taskbar.jpg I have become addicted to the gestures like Aero Snap and I find it to be quite annoying when working on a Vista or XP machine that does not have them. Being able to grab and drag windows to maximize or snap to one side of the screen or the other is just great! I have found one compatibility problem. Punkbuster in Call of Duty 4 does not like Windows 7. In the beta it would simply kick me out of every game. In the RC the Punkbuster service won't start. Hopefully they will fix that soon. Punkbuster works fine in Crysis.

I have it installed on 3 rigs and for most things I really like it....
I have it on the HTPC and so far I dont like it on that... movie play back from files from the server is spotty and glitchy and they were fine in XP.... I can push pull from teh server at 100MB/s but for some reason a 700mb movie file refuses to play all the way through without issue.... I am sure I could tweak the services and speed things up but why do all that when XP as loaded does it fine....

well now that I got it installed today, I have been playing around with it all day so far, and the more I play with it the more I like it.
I have been very busy installing all my favorite software on it to see if it will run good, and so far it all has run great, also been setting up the doc folders and copying everything from my main computer over to the windows 7 computer. I am beginning to think that Microsoft finaly has came up with a winner, hopeing that they don't mess it up by the time the final release comes out. I am sure I will be buying it. ![]()

Your answer is to run punkbuster in compatibility mode with Vista or XP. Go to the program root folder and find punkbuster.exe(or whatever it is), right click, properties, click compatibility and then click what one you want. Should solve your issue

Windows 7 seems a step in the right direction. I've noticed it takes about half as much ram on start up. Today, OS's are more than just an Operating System. They have become more of a software program. You've mention Ubuntu, the modern look and feel of the OS is what most people are expecting today and Microsoft is finally catching on. It's not just computer geeks using computers anymore, it's everyone.

I have win7 on 5 rigs and I got it down to 1 PC and a busted install.... Only happens in VLC on the 1 rig but media player/center are fine....other rigs are fine... It's a driver conflict with Firefox I believe...I aint done testing yet.... Firefox does have issue with certain apps when installed with other apps already in place...mainly Windows Live Messenger and EVGA precision...and Everest... Been running the betas since the inception and the Firefox/Live thing has been there since build 60** |

I've been using 7 since the Beta version on one PC. It is Vista but with MANY improvements.....unfortunately, it's still Vista.

Sort of agree, but faster, less of a RAM hog, and more people will like it, including businesses who were skeptical about vista.

Installed 64-bit version. Had to find and install a ralink driver for my Linksys wireless card. Bit of a pain but it worked. Other than that, Windows 7 makes me a happy camper.

My biggest complaint with Windows7 is that I don't have any big complaints. No signficiant problems. What's the point of a beta or RC1 that you don't have to constantly fiddle?
I started with 32bit on my desktop and switched to 64bit. Both run fine. I'm still running 32bit on my netbook, of course. |

Just to give a bit of an idea as to why I like W7 and think it is a fast non-resource hogging OS.
I use an old Compaq Presario as a test rig on my work bench, it is using the original AMD Sempron 1.81GHz processor and 2 gig of ram. I have installed a Promise raid card and I am running W7 on a 160gig Seagate harddrive via the raid card, I am also running XP on a new 80gig Seagate via the original IDE port. There is very little extra software installed in W7, XP on the other hand is loaded up with all sorts of diagnostic tools and antivirus/malware scanners, neither install has much in the way of personal files. Both OS's can see both harddrives and both OS installs, including the Compaq recovery partition, the point I am trying to make is that with the limited resources of this machine, AVG in W7 will do a full antivirus scan of both harddrives and both Compaq partitions in just over forty minutes. Although I haven't tried it in a while I don't think the same scan done in XP could be done anywhere near as fast. I like Windows 7 and I find it a fast, stable OS. It gets my vote of confidence.

I finally got around to installing the 7 disk I created a couple weeks ago. Had to get a new activation code since the original one had expired but the install went very smoothly. I opted to use a new 80Gb sata hdd I had on the shelf and did a clean install. The machine I chose is the one I use daily and had Vista Ultimate installed on a 320Gb hdd. I've been using Vista since the original beta days and currently have machines running in my home and business with Windows 2000, XP Home & Pro, Vista Ultimate 32 & 64 bit - and now Windows 7. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been - a fresh face with improved resource usage. Vista Ultimate is laggy compared with 7. So far, all my software has installed without any issues. The only problem area right now is the scroll wheel on my mouse is slow and erratic. Gotta play with that a bit more. Interestingly, I use dual 19" monitors and 7 enabled both during the installation without any Display property tweaking. I also use Windows Home Server and 7 is able to access the server & network without any issues. Simply changing the workgroup to match the network and using the same user name/password gives me immediate access to all files on the Vista hdd as well as the server. Windows Media Player is a bit different and will take some getting used to.

I down loaded the W7 beta on an older laptop and even in the beta form worked well with the P4 Intel 1.5ghz cpu and 1 gig of pc2700 memory.
Now I have down loaded W7 RC as a dual boot on my Acer laptop with Vista Home Premium. I have had absolutely no problems with either down load. I am very happy with W7 at this point and will look into purchasing it when available. Carl |

My error problem with windows update was fixed when it downloaded updates automatically.. I like Win7 better and will never go back to vista.. Only issue with 7 is IE 8. Sites like pogo.com I can't play any games not even in compatibility mode. Other than that it is great. I even play Call of Duty 4 with no issues at all..
