Angry Fire PC Running Vista Won't Shut Down

I recently bought a new Gateway laptop that runs Vista. I downloaded the automatic software updates from Microsoft today and suddenly the computer WILL NOT SHUT DOWN. When I go to Start -> Shutdown, the computer Restarts instead of shutting down. The only way to get the computer to shut down is to pull the power supply out and then remove the battery.

How can this be fixed?

Hello
first comes first.
1. Start > Shutdown isn't SHUTDOWN on VISTA. Start > Shutdown is just STAND BY .!!!

To Shutdown you will need to go one Step or click more.. Like
Start > Shutdown > klick the small Arrow and there Select SHUTDOWN.

Have you done it that way?

Have you tried the other Options in the Shutdown Menu?

I've done system restore and yes, I know which buttons to push to instruct it to shutdown. Sometimes it works, more often it doesn't.

This is truly the biggest piece of junk I have ever used. Don't but a Gateway!

Any ideas on how to get a computer to actually turn off?

What if you log in to safe mode, and then try to shut down? Will that work?

Try reinstalling the system drivers. See if that makes a difference.

Do you have Restart on Error enabled? If so, an error when shutting down will cause it to restart. In XP, System Properties->Advanced->Startup and Recovery, uncheck Automatically Restart (I don't remember if the path is different in Vista). This will give you a blue screen and you can use the error code to debug.
