vista-- slow opening folders

cleaned all the history-temp etc...
defragged

for some reason when opening folders it is taking a lot longer.

the PC has plenty memory....

It just seems to be the folders taking more time to open.

I'm not that keen on file indexing etc.... if it could be that or something like that.

any help is appreciated.
It is Vista Home Service Pack 1

Is the view set to thumbnail? If so, try changing it.

If you open a folder for a second time - does it open faster?
If so - deleting the iconcache.db file can help. In XP, it's located:

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\iconcache.db

The same file in Vista will probably located under the folder C:\User\YOUR USER NAME

thanks

well to say it strange would be a miss leading statement.
Its not my PC ( I don't care for Vista personally) anyway, I tried changing the views, and they were opening in a new window each time--changed that. No go.
What I noticed was that it opens system folders, My Doc's, all the way through the root of C pretty fast.
There were about 20 folders on the desktop. They contained jpg's, bitmap's etc... graphics
and the like. Opening them sererate took a long time, while on the desktop.
Put one in a folder in the root and it poped right open. I don't see how that should change things but it did.
I was wondering about file indexing or prefetching or something like that, that would change the manner in the opening of the files, how they were located or something?
Putting them )the slow opening folders on the desktop) in other folders in the root seemed to fix it, but I am very curious about why it fixed it, so if you know anything I'd love ta hear it.

thanks again
