Motherboard Drivers for Vista

Hi, I have an XP Pro SP2 computer with system spec :-

P4 3.0GHz
Intel D865GBF mobo
Radeon X1650 Pro AGP8x 512MB graphics card
3.4GB RAM

and I was going to install Vista on it (on a different hard disk) as I have not yet used Vista, and want to experiment with it, whilst still having XP on the other hard drive for normal usage.

However on looking on Intel.com I notice the above mobo does not support Vista at all, ie. there are no Vista drivers available for it.

But the Vista Upgrade Advisor run on the machine reports there are no issues with this mobo, and that Vista should be able to run on it.

I am wondering therefore if I can go ahead and install Vista and use whatever mobo drivers it supplies. Will this mean poor performance ?

Could I use the XP drivers for the mobo on Vista ?

Many thanks for any advice/info.

Vista has a bunch of drivers built in for older hardware. You should be good with those drivers on a fresh install.

It seems to have installed quite well. I got Vista driver for the graphics card from ATI and it was able to find a driver for the onboard audio on the internet.

I note performance (tested using Passmark Performance Test v6.1) is about 10% less than it was under XP Pro SP2.

But otherwise quite a good looking OS.

You might want to use the Services recommendations at Black Viper's site. That can speed things up a bit.

If you have Aero turned on, then turn it off, that will speed up vista considerably.

One puzzle - in System Properties, Vista reports 4GB RAM (4GB RAM is physically installed, which is the maximum the mobo can support), whereas during boot up the BIOS POST counts up to only 3.4GB and XP reported only 3.4GB.

Is Vista able to somehow access the full 4GB and how can it do this ?

Visa 64 bit can see and access more than 4 gig of RAM.
