Windows 7 Desktop Flickers With High Disk Activity
I love that I can use my own forums for tech support.
![]() Anyway, got an issue. Just installed Windows 7 to an old Gateway I had around. Everything went fine, however now the desktop flickers constantly when the system is under load. IT seems like it is tied to disk activity. When the hard drive is going, the screen flickers badly. If I leave it completely idle and do nothing, the image on screen remains constant. The moment I do something, it flickers to the point where I see parts of what is on the left side of the desktop flashing wildly over to the right side and vice versa. Makes it difficult to use. This same machine, under Windows XP, didn't do that at all. No hardware changes. Also, interstingly, it only seems to happen when the desktop is initiated. If you're looking at the shutdown screen or even waiting for a system update, there is no flickering even though the PC is busy. So, it seems to only be on the desktop itself. Any ideas? I'm admittedly a bit out of the Windows tech support loop these days. I use a Mac as my main machine now and have for awhile now.

UPDATE: Fixed it by replacing the video card. Apparently, the onboard video is a piece of crap. Switched it out with an ATI PCI-E card and the flickering stopped. Go figure.

Do you know the exact specifications of that old Hateway?
I have a few customers here with older machines who want to try W7 and to be honest I tell them that it will run fine with most hardware (within reason) simply because I have it running on an old Presario with an AMD Sempron 1.8Ghz and 2 gigs of ram and it runs fine with onboard video. It would be nice to know should anyone ask and they have similar hardware to what you have.

This particular machine has an AMD X2 3800+, 2GB of RAM, and onboard Nvidia GeForce 6100. The machine only came with 1 GB, but I added another gig. I'm fairly sure it was the video giving me problems, and I replaced it with an ATI PCI-E card...don't remember the exact model.
