linking to start menu

Have been using RC 7 on a new Dell studio (installed as clean install) with no problems, other than not being able to find stuff (I'm used to XP). The only apps I use all the time are Office '03, Photoshop CS4, & Lightroom 2.3. I've added and removed a number of other programs to see how they perform. I'm confused with the start menu. When I began using Windows 7 I seemed to be able to pin any app to the start menu, but lately, that is not the case. This also applies to removing apps from start menu. Any idea why some apps can be added to start menu via right click and others not? The most confusing is with Lightroom. Initially I installed the 64 bit version with no probs. I needed to removed it and all Adobe apps to install working copy of PS CS4 (64 bit) and then after reinstall of LR, I can't pin it to the start menu. Other than this, I am loving the new OS!

Hi

This is how I did it.

Click on desktop, select New, select Shortcut, create a shortcut on the desktop, right click on it, and select Pin to Start Menu, or Task Bar. This probably isn't the right way to do it but it works.

Personally I keep almost all my icons on the task bar, the only thing I don't are things I seldom use.

I don't have any icons on my desktop including the recycle bin, I just like to keep it clean.

Just like XP, the start menu has an option where you tell it how many items you can have on the start menu. Have you maxed out that number?

The number of items for the start menu is grayed out when I access that from the control panels. When I go to my start menu and right click on MS Office items or iTunes, I have the option of adding to or removing from being pinned to start menu. As for my Adobe items, Firefox & IE8, when I right click I am only asked if I want to run as an administrator or remove from list. I've also tried to pin a desktop shortcut, but I only get run as an administrator as an option.
I, too, am keeping the desktop clean of all icons, unlike my trusty XP desktop. Because I'm using RC 7 on a laptop, I want to maximize screen space and do not use the taskbar.

Hi

I have used the Quick Launch Task Bar for most of my commonly used programs for a long time.
My XP desktop has only a few items on it. Mainly the Recycle Bin and a Temp folder that I stick things in until I decide what to do with them.

If nothing else you only have to click on the icon once to start the program.

I like the way that 7 places the active program indicator over the icon instead of making a separate indicator for it.

This make more space available.
