Windows Vista Update - Crashed the first time; do it again?

Hello

I recently attempted to reformat my Vista machine. And as soon as I got everything going, I started up Windows Update. It detected 53 items that were 'Important' to be installed (a lot of Security updates for Vista) and I proceeded on doing so. After they were finished, my computer restarted and I entered the screen that said "Configuring Updates". So I left my computer alone. It took a while but at the time I thought it was understandable since there were so many updates. However, it then finished its updates and sent me to a black screen telling me that Windows Vista could not start up because it was missing a file (the file was something in Win32/System32 etc. with the word boot somewhere). It recommended me to insert my Windows Vista disk and repair it. I did so and after that I went back to the configuring updates page, and it stayed that way for the next 2 hours. I got impatient and figured that nothing was going to happen and tried to do a system restore with my Vista disk. It gave me an error and I concluded that my OS installation was a complete failure.

I tried reformatting once again, and now I'm at the Start page of my Windows Vista without my updates installed. However, I am fearful that if I install the updates, the same thing might happen again.

Can someone here assist me with a safe way to get through this problem risk-free?

Thanks.

If your disk does not have SP1, download and install SP1 before running online updates.

32-bit download: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

64-bit download: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
