Microsoft to end Windows 7 RC downloads August 15
Microsoft to end Windows 7 RC downloads August 15
Windows 7 Beta begins auto-rebooting July 1 and will expire on August 1. Microsoft will turn off the Windows 7 RC (Release Candidate) tap on Aug. 15, the company said today. "The [Release Candidate] download program closes August 15. After that, you won't be able to get the download, but you can still install the RC and get a key if you need one," Microsoft employee Stephen Rose said on a company blog today. Windows 7 will hit retail and debut on new PCs on Oct. 22, Microsoft has said. The release candidate will not expire until June 1, 2010, although it will begin automatically shutting down at two-hour intervals starting March 1, 2010. Rose reminded users of Windows 7 Beta that they face those auto-shutdowns much sooner. "You need to move to the RC and fast," he said. "Starting July 1, the Beta will start to reboot every 2 hours and [it will] expire Aug 1." http://www.infoworld.com/d/windows/m...ows_2009-06-24 |

So Windows 7 is on its way for real. Aside from being a stable 64-bit OS (thus giving you access to more ram), is there a compelling reason to upgrade from XP?

To me, there is no compelling reason to upgrade to the RC. Wait for the final and give it a bit of time to stabilize.

no I wouldn't upgrade either. But would you look hard at considering it for a new build? I would guess software compatibility is the main thing.

Ya know, I didnt think of this before but here it goes. I have been having random shutdown problems with the RC7 on the labtop. I have tried everything. Do you think that maybe the screwed up when the computer is suppose to shut down after it expires? Maybe this is my problem. I have researched this for like 2 weeks and have gotten no where...

I would most likely use it for a new build, partly because I'd be looking at 4GB of ram, I'd be needing to purchase an OS anyway, and also because it doesn't make sense to put a 10 year old OS on a brand new computer that I intend to be using for 5 years or so. But I don't see any reason to spend the $$ to upgrade my current machine to XP.
I have been using the RC for a bit, and it works just fine. |

I wouldn't use the RC on my primary computer for the simple reason that there is no GUARANTEE that it will upgrade smoothly to the real thing. I'd play with it on my bench box except I refuse to get a Windows Live ID.

you dont need a windows live ID to play with Win7....
I dont have one and I use it..never once has it asked me to sign up for one are have a found a program that needed it other than a game.... I would say go for it and try it..if you havent you'll be amazed how well it works especially after all the crap we went thru with Vista.... the RC build 7100 offered at teh MS site works very well and I have had no issues with it...well almost none...there has been some slow I/O performance at times but nothing like with Vista...I mean it's faster than XP in all aspects for everything I have tried... If you do try it I will say this... Install it on a larger drive like 120gb or something...as I have had installs eat up 40gig easily on x64 with all updates and even then it's still snappy as all get out... here is the kicker....when you load Win7 and get it running...if you hook internet to it and you have to hooked to a router with other PC also hooked to that router EVERYTHING done on the other PCs is cached on the Win7 rig... Lets say the Win7 rig is PC #1 and you have a 4 port router with all other slots populated...with a a total of 4 PC...if you are on PC #2 and Swapping files from PC#2 to PC#3 those files are cached on PC#1 (the win7 PC) so if the drive gets full you wont be able to move *any* files on teh network....you will get a Not Enough Resources Error...the only way to bypass this is to shut the win7 rig off....it sees and logs any traffic of any PC it sees...bummer eh'? not sure but I think Vista does the same but not sure as I have used Vista Since SP1

Burned a boot disk and installed. Straightforward, no problems
I did have a bit of a problem where I posted here for assistance regarding the dual boot setup but it was a simple solution with no changes to OS nor network. Particulars are in this thread: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=207995 It's been running fine for about 2 months now principally using Windows 7. Just realized, the question wasn't directed to me! Sorry! Last edited by Bob338; 06-25-2009 at 08:48 AM. |

Yeah, I'm curious how MaxRat downloaded the .iso without creating a windows live account; when I did it I had to sign up for an account.

I don't think I did but I don't remember and I wouldn't have considered it a big deal anyway so I may have. What's the problem with signing up?

What would be the use to continue using RC after march if it starts to shut down every 2hrs.. So instead of me getting rid of it in June, I'm just going to do it in March..

You may want to consider buying the upgrade to the release copy which will be sold tomorrow through July 11, for 50 bucks. You won't get the disk till the release date in October but the price seems right and I doubt it will be any cheaper at Newegg next spring.

I had a technet account....
but if you have MSN messenger you can navigate to the MS site where windows 7 RC is listed and log in with the MSN messenger username and password you use... you can sign in with a Passport too.... keys are all teh same for the betas as they are for the RC...so if you need one MS will give you one before the end of July... Actually now that I think about it the Windows Live ID and MSN messenger ID are one in the same... As for the question about the caching....I have NO idea where the files are cached... I found out as I had filled my Win7 drive until I had 4gb left and tried moving files...thats when I found out....

As I just posted on the motherboard site...... I had downloaded Win 7 RC awhile back. Also had Vista on the same computer.
I wanted to run XP because of hardware issues I had with both Vista and Win 7 RC (I expected issues with Win 7) Anyway, I had to remove everything and start over loading XP, then Vista etc. Windows 7RC now came back being called Windows 7 Ultimate. Man, I don't know what happened, but Win 7 Ultimate runs great! Better than Vista ever did for me. Since each OS is sitting on it's own separate drive everything works fine. When I boot up I have to make a choice of OS to open, which is the way I like it. I had to sign up with Live to be able to make the ISO disk and obtain a product key. That causes no issues for me and I would purchase Windows 7 today if it were for sale. I believe I will like 7 better than XP. Certainly better than Vista........... pg |
