Going back to XP, Maybe

Against my better judgment, I loaded Windows 7. Not a happy camper at this time. I have a ton of software that will not work. I'm too tired to try anything else to get it to work and I'm trying to go back to XP. Any clues as to how to do this.

Have you tried running the software in compatibility mode?

Right click on the program executable your trying to run. There is a compatibility tab. Then choose windows xp mode.

Ok, it looks like I have to load all my programs back in from scratch. I was hoping not to have to do this but I just loaded MS Office and they all work in xp mode. Thanks for getting me started in the right direction. Win 7 is a bit more to my liking than what it was.
Jim
Actually I just found out they don't have to be in xp mode, they just had to be reinstalled.

I did an upgrade with everything in place. I think I would have been just as far ahead to format the hard drive and do a fresh install. I guess I was thinking it would be as easy as my upgrades from the past. I never had Vista and was coming from XP. If I would have realized most of the programs would not do the transfer trick with "Easy Transfer" I would have started from scratch.
Easy transfer and restore was good for about 4 total hours and that four hours could have been better used to restore from scratch.
Oh well, live and learn.

One more question, there is a lock on my Documents and settings Icon. How do you get that off?

Well, Windows 7 takes a bit to get used to it. Its different from XP for sure and the install was a pain. But, it sure seems to work faster than XP. I have 3 programs that will not load. Two of them I will wait until the XP emulator comes out. I have had someone say it is already hear but its not a problem. One thing that upsets me a bit is my copy of Nero 7. It will not load or run on Win 7. Of course, the wonderful Nero 9 can fix the problem for a sixty dollar bill. I don't think so. All the reviews I have read on this are not good.
One great thing I found is my DVD Decryptor and DVD Shrink both still work. Without Nero the DVD Shrink allowed me to make an ISO file. When I double clicked on the file, Win 7 burner kicked in and did the burn job. This was a pleasant surprise.
I think, at least so far, I like Windows 7 and it looks to be a good upgrade. With that said, if you do an upgrade from XP, do a clean install. You will do it in less time and it will go much better for you.

Well, about 3 weeks of using Windows 7, I like it and even purchased an early copy of it. Windows XP virtual is an easy load and works great. I ended up with 2 programs that wouldn't load on Win 7 but the virtual machine loaded them and it works like a dream. I think they have a great operating system and if HP comes out with up grades for the software to run them on Win 7, it will be golden.

I would let others be the guinea pigs first. Consider purchasing it after SP1 is released. I think people are overly optimistic about this OS. This is still the same company that made Vista and Windows Me.

I hear you on that but I made a clone drive of my XP system that is sitting on a shelf. I can go back any time I want to but this OS seems to be rock solid. So far, there are a few things that bug me but I can do everything I want it to do and more. I think it is as solid as the XP platform became after SP2. I think the people's overly optimistic feelings are for a good reason, it works.
