Vista to Win 7 upgrade

Hello everyone,

Here is the deal. I have a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit which came with a Dell Laptop I purchased two (2) or so years ago. Since then, I have installed Vista on my desktop and what have you (which is not Dell) without problems. My question is, will I have any problems by using my current Vista key and such to qualify for the Windows 7 32 bit upgrade? In other words, since I can install it on any computer without an issue, would I be correct in assuming that the upgrade would take no problem? I understand that this is not an OEM or Retail copy that I purchased at a store but rather a copy that was distributed with this laptop that I own. I am not so much as saying that I couldn't buy Windows Vista HP from Newegg for $109 with a free Win 7 upgrade and free shipping. I was under the impression that if this in theory would work, I could do this instead. Just weighing all my options at this point.

Thanks

Well in that case, let me try to ascertain an answer to the following question. Vista Home Premium is $109 on Newegg as previously stated with a free Windows 7 upgrade coupon. Now, I didn't personally see it on Newegg, but does that coupon work on either Win 7 Home premium or pro? I am inclined to think it is just Home Premium. I was personally looking to get the Pro version.

I completely missed that, as I just clicked on for example Vista Home Premium and it said free coupon. In that case, I have Windows 7 downloaded already so I guess that's not really a good deal as you have suggested.

In addition, I see on the home page for pcmech, the article regarding getting Windows 7 if XP was illegal (if I could find my XP disk, I wouldn't be in this situation to begin with.) Now, if I was to follow that and purchase Vista Home Basic and then Win 7 Pro, I should be in good shape correct?

Thanks for all your help.

If you buy Vista Home, then you can buy a Windows 7 early sale.

Or, you can skip buying Vista at all and then buy the full version of Win 7 when it goes on sale in October.
Either way it will cost you $200 and some change............ pg

Well if I missed something, according to EzyStvy that Windows 7 early sale is just the Release Candidate? Anyway, I was looking to go back to the Pro version of windows which is going to be $299 upon release. I can save about $100 if I get Vista Home Basic and qualify for the Pro upgrade. What I am trying to ascertain at this very moment is whether or not that is the correct combination of software. In other words purchasing Vista Basic and then purchasing Win7 Pro.

Thanks

Pretty sure you can buy Vista on newegg right now and get a free Windows 7 upgrade coupon. It does also mention the RC, but I think that's something else.

If you want professional, I think this is what you want (notice the "includes free windows 7 upgrade coupon".

Talk to newegg customer support if you're not sure, but I'm pretty sure that's a coupon for a release version of Windows 7.

What you do is buy the Windows 7 Pro at a discount if you do this before the offer is ended.
There will only be a certain number of these sold (MS does not say how many.... just limited)

The Win 7 will be shipped on Oct 22 and you will not be charged until the day it ships to you.
This will allow you to upgrade from Vista to Win 7 Pro. Win 7 Ultimate is not for sale at a discount.

Win 7RC (Release Canidate) is a free download, which will end soon. If you have it by that time you can use it until June of 2010...... if I understand correctly.
I went ahead and placed my order for Win 7 Pro 2 weeks ago for $99.99 instead of being hit for $200 after this sale offer ends. That is coming up soon, by the way....... pg

Well, I talked to Newegg, and they were unable to give me an answer. The actual terminology used was that since it doesn't state what the Upgrade coupon is good for, I need to call Microsoft to determine exactly what the terms are for the coupon.

Here is the link to all the information. I have no solved my issue.

Thanks

I don't think that link applies to you Extremerc12. That's for people who have recently purchased a new PC with Vista. There is a coupon enclosed with the computer for upgrading later.

The way I understand it currently, we can buy the upgrade from straight from Newegg or MS and pay the $50 or $100 for the upgrade. You still have the problem of getting your current copy legal.

The link I posted was just to show which version corresponded to which upgrade. In this case, Newegg is stating that if you buy Windows Vista Business, you get a coupon for a free upgrade to Windows 7 Pro. I am more than likely going to go that route.
