Windows 7 upgrade

I'm considering upgrading to W7 Pro. Basically for the XP mode feature. I understand that I need to download a couple of items after installing 7. No problem there.

My question is in running the virtual PC. I know it needs a cpu that supports virtualization and virtualization needs enabled in BIOS. I'm trying to figure out if my hardware will/can support it. Particularly the BIOS. I've checked with Intel, my cpu supports virtualization. However I don't see anything in my BIOS regarding it. I have gone through the mobo manual and nothing is mentioned there. I've also checked Asus's site for new BIOS updates. Only 3 since mine, no mention of anything about adding virtualization to the menu. Is it possible I'm just overthinking this thing? The only thing I can think of doing now is sending an e-mail to ASUS support to ask them about it.

My specs:

Asus P5K-E motherboard BIOS rev. 1013
Intel E8400 3.0 Ghz C2D
Corsair XMS RAM 2x2 GB
WD Caviar Black 500 gb hdd x1 (Primary drive)
Seagate 500 hdd x1 (Secondary drive{firmware updated})
Lite-On DVD combo drive x2
Samsung FDD x1
EVGA Nvidia 8800 GT video card
Linksys wireless "G" adapter
Corsair 650 watt PSU
XP Pro SP3

From Intel's web site:

Quote:
Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT), Intel® Trusted Execution Technology (Intel® TXT), and Intel® 64 architecture require a computer system with a processor, chipset, BIOS, enabling software and/or operating system, device drivers and applications designed for these features. Performance will vary depending on your configuration. Contact your vendor for more information.

They make it sound like the mobo must support it?

That's how I was reading it.... And why I'm asking to confirm my suspicions.

it is a CPU thing but the BIOS must have an option to Enable it as well...

Most motherboard are Disabled by default...but Asus seems to be Enabled by default....so you should be fine...

look in the BIOS under CPU Settings...it's in the same column as C1E and EIST Mine was Enabled by default...

there are only a few of the smaller C2D chips that may not support Visualization but I am unsure of which ones...

Yours does though.....

Went back into BIOS. Selected Advanced Tab, selected CPU Configuration. Here's what I found.

CPU Ratio Setting - Enabled
C1E Support - Enabled
Max CPUID Value Limit - Disabled
Vanderpool Technology - Enabled
CPU TM Function - Enabled
Execute Disable Bit - Enabled
Intel Speedstep Tech. - Enabled

What am I looking for?

I'm sorry Ezy. I don't see that anywhere. The tabs I have available to me are: Main, Advanced, Power, Boot, Tools and Exit. When I clicked on Advanced, like I had described earlier, at the top of the CPU Configuration page it said "Configure Advanced CPU Settings".
Intel Virtualization Tech was not listed anywhere. My board may not support that I guess.

Would it help if I posted some pics of the individual tabs? Doubt I could do it today. Gotta couple of other things I need to do and then get ready for work.

I do sincerely appreciate yours and Maxrat's time in helping me.

Thanks Maxrat. Now why did they have to make that so difficult?

Anyway, thanks for your time guys. I'm off to order W7 pro now.
