Question Windows 7 specific drivers necessary?

If I install Windows 7 RC on the second HDD with XP installed on the first HDD, would it be recommended to install the graphics card driver which has Windows 7 compatability in the HDD that has Windows 7 installed? So that each OS would have a different graphics driver for each OS. My XP is 32 bit and Windows 7 RC I will install is 64 bit if that is of any relevance. nVidia's latest driver has the same driver version for both XP and Windows 7 but the Windows 7 one is a bigger file so it must be a little different. And would I need to install other drivers specific to Windows 7 such as the MB? What if it doesn't have any for Windows 7?

Each OS is independant and needs its own drivers for all devices.

Yeah I know that I have to install drivers for each OS, I was just wondering if the same drivers for XP would work on Windows 7, and if there are no drivers specifically for Windows 7, and there's a problem, does that mean I'm out of luck on using it?

Look for Vista drivers when you can't find Win 7 drivers.

And many times, people have to purchase new items like scanners/printers etc to replace their 9 year old ones

Nizmo, I just went through what you are describing. Win 7 RC will down load the Nvidia drivers as a recommended update. I am using an old Nvidia 7800GTX card and have no problems in Win 7 RC with the drivers the update provided. I'm using two hdds too.

Yea Windows 7 should tell you what drives need to be updated and will go out and get them and download them for you.

just get the Win7 drivers....

if your using an older card 8 series or 9 series nvidia it will install as it loads on build 7100...newer builds have the drivers for the 200 series as well...

but I always install the latest drivers before I do anything else...but the video driver is the only one I do...for the cuda part...

Windows XP drivers, by and large, won't work properly as drivers for Windows 7, even if you mod the .INF files. Windows Vista drivers, usually will work in the cases that you can't get Windows 7 specific drivers. If there are Windows 7 specific drivers, get those. End of story. Just because they have the same version number, doesn't mean they will work the same for driver revisions between OS releases. Windows XP drivers of version 185.xxxx won't work for Windows 7 that also has drivers released that are version 185.xxxx.
However for really old peripherals that the manufacturer has dropped support of and never released a Vista driver... well, sometimes you can use Virtual XP (Windows 7 Professional and above) to shim in old XP (and 2000) drivers to make use of them. You can read more about it over here: http://tinyurl.com/832nco
