Ultimate and pro will offer no advantage over basic, home premium, or home.
64 may run a bit slower in benchmarks, but I wouldn't worry about it. If you don't want dx10 or higher, then xp would be the way to go.

XP, unless you have games with DX10 capabilities, which are few currently.
Win Vista wasn't all that great since it was a resource hog. Haven't tried Win7 yet for gaming, but I would imagine it does fairly well.

If you have a ton of ram Vista 64 isn't bad - my system does fine with it. You need at least 1.5 gigs just for the os though.

From what I've read it does, and that was on the RC1 build (which means the final one should be better). It's supposed to be just as fast as XP, if not faster in some respects, although unfortunately I have no benchmarks offhand to back anything up.
You should download the RC1 and test it for yourself if it's still being offered. |

I'm using W7 rc1 and haven't had any issues as of yet. I can run everyting on Steam, plus Crysis, and Crysis Warhead. I will definitely be getting the final release version in the fall.
