every time i boot up, i get different folder settings. i usually use "list" only but it comes up in tiles or details or large icons at random.

Unfortunately, there is very little I can do to help cure Vista's craziness with folder settings. Seriously, do a search through the web and you'll see more reports of Vista folder problems and grandma's remedies than for the cold. There are solutions contradicting previous solutions and suggestions of using alternate file managers.
