Memory and CPU Usage low, but Vista still is slow/laggy/choppy

Hi all,

I have noticed that my Vista Ultimate x64 has become rather laggy/choppy/slow on my system, and I am trying to figure out why. My CPU use is only at about 4% and RAM at about 20% being used.

My specs are:

Asus M4A79 Deluxe
AMD Phenom II x4 3.2GHz
8GB OCZ DDR2800 RAM
Nvidia Geforce GTS250
320GB WD Caviar Blue
1TB WD Caviar Black

This is rather frustrating as my system is top of the line, with my Windows Index at 5.9 (max), and I want navigation around my OS to be speedy and quick.

The only apps I run in the background are Digsby, Ventrilo, Steam, Firefox, and iTunes.

Any thoughts?

I have disabled indexing btw.

Thanks!

Malware and Viruses are known to affect performance.

yes i use the internet, however i have avg full retail version + firewall and am very careful about what i download, as i have never had a virus before

at first i thought it was the indexing running in the background, but i turned that off and it still slows down every now and then

Is their any perticular application or system resource that is consuming most of your CPU and Memory?

To be on the safe side, just scan your computer with anti-virus.
Just check by doing ALT+CTRL+DEL. Click on the Processes tab at the top and see which processes are using most of the CPU and Memory?

How many times have you installed Operating Systems on this Hard Drive?

see thats the thing - NOTHING seems to be consuming my CPU or RAM, as CPU usage is between 2-8% and RAM usage is ~2GB (out of 8GB)

I always perform a clean install of any OS - wipe the partition, format NTFS, install OS.

I am really perplexed, possibly just going to do a clean install of windows 7 when it is released if this does not get any better.
