Vista storage question?
I recently purchased a new Dell XPS system. Looking back, I wish I had built it, but I am still quite happy with the end result. This new system came with Vista Home Premium 64bit. I also should have the Win 7 upgrade on the way soon.
I have been adding my files over from an external HD and everything is working fine. The system has a 640GB HD and I am using about 80 GB currently plus the 60 the OS is using. I recently noticed something that and I am not quite sure why it is doing it or how to explain it. I have been looking at my C drive to check space as I add items on the HD. The other day I was sitting at 512 GB. When I began using the computer the next day the system showed that I had 506GB. I looked around and found 6GB when I went through the disc clean up. Then today basically the same thing happens. I had 501 GB and now 494GB and I can not figure out where 6+ GB of space went. I am guessing that it backed up itself somewhere, but I am not sure. It just seems like a nice piece of space that I can not account for. I want to make sure that whatever it is does not keep happening until it runs my disc space way down. Thanks for any insight. my hard drive acts similar to that but is a 250GB HDD. Except for me it doesn't lose 6GB+ it only loses a few GB every few days lol. I think it's viruses or possible detections for a virus that your AV sectioned off?

I thought that but the system is so new? If that it true I would just like to figure out how to get the 12GB's back without reformatting the drive.

I am still dropping. Just lost another 3GB. That is around 16GB this week that I can not account for.

I just found 50 GB. I went into the disc cleanup and went to more options. Inside the tab there is an option to remove all but the most recent restore point and shadow copies. I did it and gained 51GB back. Not sure if it was a good idea, but I guess time will tell.

Here is how to limit the amount of harddisk space Vista uses for System Restore points in Vista.
