Vista SP2 no boot

I was installing sp2 on my daughters dell 1525 laptop. When I came back to it about 15 minutes later the laptop was sitting in an error state. It looked like it had rebooted and was looking for a missing driver (I think it was for the hard drive). It looked like it was looking in system 32. Instead of searching I clicked next to continue without looking further. Now when I try to boot it goes through the motions but never finishes. I just get a black screen with a mouse that can be moved. When I try to boot to a dos prompt the last thing I see before the mouse on black screen is CHKDISK.SYS.
