Question OS Mismatch?

Hello,

It has been awhile but a relative asked me to look into their computer problem so here I am.

The system is a dell 530S (Pent(R) 2.5ghz, 4G ram, 500gig hd) running Vista

When it boots it gets to a system repair screen and tries to do an automatic repair which fails.

The details show:

Problem sig 01: Autofailover
Problem sig 02: 6.0.6001.18000.0.0.0.0
Problem sig 06 OsVersionmismatch

OS version 6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.1

I am not sure what this means but it is stuck in this loop.

They do not want to have to do the reinstall if they do not have to and they did not do a backup or make a restore point.

Any advice appreciated as this is the first Vista machine I have worked on (hey...my XP works just fine!)

First step for me in that situation is press F12 on boot up and select the Diagnostics area. Run the full system diagnostics to see if it's hardware related.

Thanks for the reply Panama

The flash screen gives me 2 options, F2 and F12. One is for Cmos and the other is a boot option. Neither gives me an option to run diag.

The system is automatically running Start-up repair during bootup but is unable to fix anything.

Wish I had another idea, PGT. Odd that the Diagnostics aren't there. When you press F12 you should see the Boot Selection; hard drive, cd-rom, network and Diagnostics. Every Dell I've ever worked on has the built in diagnostics unless someone has loaded their own OS and wiped the hdd/deleted partitions during the install.

Give this a read and see if it helps ya.

Thanks for the link.

I spoke with an IT guy at work that does personal repair work on the side and he said Vista sucks as he has had to do numerous reinstalls due to this. The OS gets corrupted so he usually ends up doing a reinstall. But he also said getting the user files copied off before reloading the OS is quite problematic as well.

So, I pull the drive and slave it to an XP machine and sure enough the user folders are present but the files do not show up. Is there a trick to getting them to show so I can copy them? I checked the account settings and they are set to admin with full access.

Thanks again for any help...much appreciated.
