Windows 7 on older PC
So, Christmas is coming and Santa will bring a new PC...until then...
My current PC: XPpro, 3GHz, 3GB 2 Partitions: 35gig for system & apps & 265gig for docs My high usage apps (Adobe CS4 et al & iTunes) bring my Dell to a standstill too often Only thing not compatable with Win 7 upgrade is sound card, so I want to do the following-- clean install of Win 7 on apps partion, forget the SoundBlaster card and hook speakers to the stock integrated sound card and reinstall only my most used apps until time for new PC. Anyone see a problem with this working? I think I read something about the system needing a larger Partition. I have PartitionMagic somewhere. Could I change the size of my cirrent Partitions without loosing my documents data? One last hing--suggestions for new PC? Needs to be a desktop with space for 2 disk drives plus good graphics, but not gaming |

I wouldn't spend a 100 and sumttin dollars for Win 7 on a pc that is barely worth 100 bucks...A Win 7 install will work on the 35 gig partition.

I agree - that's why the upgrade comes from an upgrade that came w/ wife's Dell. Just wondering if an upgrade would work for the few months until Dec.

Yes...For a HUNDRED and something DOLLARS you can upgrade the machine...The question is WHY would you want to do that? That money could be spent on some killer speakers or something for the new pc

The upgrade is not costing me anything. I'm just wanting to know if the upgrade for my old PC will work.

You ran the upgrade advisor didn't you? Didn't it say everything will be fine except for your sound card?
Just keep in mind that you can't UPGRADE XP. It will end up wiping your entire C drive and all of your appliactions will be gone. But other then that - Win 7 should run OK on your machine. |

I reran the Win 7 adivisor just to take a closer look at the results. I looked for an update to my sound card, but it seems my Sound Blaster is so old that it isn't even listed by the company. Then closer inspection says that the OEM sound card may not work properly either. I think I will just have to wait for Santa so I can at least have my desktop operational, even though it is SLOW. Any suggestions for what I should look for in my next PC?
