Gaming and Windows 7 resolutions

Okay, so my brother is trying to play Darkfall on Windows 7, but is having an issue with the visuals. When he enters the game, there is letterbox formatting above and below the game, as if to create a widescreen effect for his monitor. The obvious answer would be "well, change the resolution idiot...". But it's not working, he's tried every single resolution that the game allows and it's either magnified 20x, so small he can't read any text or the "widescreen format".

I had him screw around in the Windows settings to try and change his resolution, but it says he can only set it so high, even though when he had Windows Vista on the same machine it had absolutely no problems with a higher resolution or displaying the game.

Any known issues and remedies for this problem?

Which video card does he have and which drivers is he using for it?

And it wouldn't hurt to look on the Game Makers web site/support section.

We're currently living in two seperate countries and he's not online right now, but from what I understand he's using a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250. It wasn't working as intended immediately after installing the new Windows so he updated the drivers to the most current version as of yesterday with no improved results.

** We searched, researched and asked everywhere that might possibly be involved with said game. The best answers were "adjusting resolution in the NVIDIA control panel", which does nothing. The two options just recommended that we haven't tested yet are "Look for drivers for the monitor in case it is being recognized as a PnP, or to look for older NVIDIA drivers".

The last two we haven't tested because he is not currently online, do you think that could be the case?
